Pre-Web BBS
Before the Internet days, email (then it was often called "echo mail")
was sent by computers using dial-up connections. The FidoNet system, invented by
Jeff Rush, used a geographically-based strategy of mail distribution to minimize
long distance charges. It grew from 2 PCs in 1984 to about 25,000 PCs at the
time I moved to the web in 1995.
People who ran the Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) that sent this email were called
SysOps (short for Systems Operators). In addition to email, BBS usually offered
shareware programs and online games. While many BBS existed before FidoNet,
the heyday of both lasted from 1985 - 1995.
- 1994 - Reciprocity BBS in Chicago, IL (FidoNet 1:115/296)
- 1992 - I began exchanging internet mail as chival.bogus.com
- 1989 - Chivalry! BBS in Denver, CO (FidoNet 1:104/916)
